A body has been found near where Memphis jogger Eliza Fletcher went missing last week, though police have not positively identified the remains.
“At 5:07 pm, officers in the 1600 block of Victor located a deceased party,” the Memphis Police Department tweeted just before 8:30 p.m. Monday. “The identity of this person and the cause of death is unconfirmed at this time. The investigation is ongoing. Once additional information is available, we will provide an update.”
The 34-year-old Fletcher, an elementary schoolteacher and mother of two, went missing last week during a 4:30 a.m. jog.
Police arrested Cleotha Abston, 38, on Sunday and charged him with especially aggravated kidnapping and tampering with evidence. He had previously served nearly 20 years in prison for almost the identical crime after pleading guilty in November 2001 to especially aggravated kidnapping after snatching an attorney in 2000. He was released in 2020.
